First Run of 2012

Yesterday, I took my first run of the new year at Seneca Park in Louisville. I was supposed to meet a group of ladies from Junior League but I of course was running late…so instead I brought Andy. Probably not the best idea considering he wanted to sniff and lift at every tree and pole in the place…ugghh boys.

Because, I have not run since July 2011. We went around once and it was more walking than running to be honest. But I got to try out my new shoes!! It did however cross my mind that I would get my shoes dirty on the first run out then I realized that was stupid and kept going O_0.

I am hoping the running will not only get me in shape but help me relieve tension and stress. My schedule is crazy and anytime I can do physical activity and clear my head…COUNT ME IN! So with the first fun/walk in for the year I am hoping I can find time in to do it or something else every day and feel free to take Sundays off.

UPDATE: Running Shoes

A few days after my post about getting new running shoes, I received a call from Jeff at Fleet Feet Louisville and learned that the shoes I ordered did not come in the size I needed. ūüė¶ Another set back. However, he encouraged me to come in and try on a few more pair because believe it or not I had not tried on the entire store. It took me a bit over a week to get back in and try some on…and today was the day. Apparently,¬†I have been wearing the wrong size workout shoe for a while.

I learned today that only one shoe company makes the shoe size I need in women’s. I can’t wear men’s shoes because they are too wide in all the wrong places for my narrow feet. So, I threw down the gauntlet and after talking to the lovely ginger(red head)¬†man at Fleet Feet Louisville and the trainee from Chicago I am now the owner of Asics¬†(the link takes you to where they are a bit less expensive than I paid). I also purchased in-soles to help me gain a bit more stability and some much-needed arch support for my flat tootsies.

With my new shoes and compression socks from Fleet Feet Louisville…I am ready to go!

Book on the Nook: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

I finally joined the Junior League Book Club and I am really looking forward to reading this book. I downloaded it to my nook Friday but I have not had a chance to get into yet. My book club meets next Tuesday so I need to haul arse! I look forward to this for several reasons but mainly because of the historical reference and the fact that there are countless other innovations made by African-Americans yet they have received no credit or prestige from them. Below is a brief overview of the book. You can find out more at Barnes and

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells‚ÄĒtaken without her knowledge‚ÄĒbecame one of the most important tools in medicine. The first ‚Äúimmortal‚ÄĚ human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. If you could pile all HeLa¬†cells ever grown onto a scale, they‚Äôd weigh more than 50 million metric tons‚ÄĒas much as a hundred Empire State Buildings. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb‚Äôs effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions.
Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave.

Product Review and Cure for Dry Scalp

Neem oil stinks! There I said it. However, I have smelled worse and it is more of a garlic smell more than anything. On to the review.

I have found the secret to curing dry scalp whether it is from processing or a form of dermatitis. Neem oil a vegetable oil pressed from the neem seed. The oil has many medicinal uses and can be used both internally and externally. For the many uses of Neem I suggest a quick google search. My reason for using Neem is dry scalp. I use about 8 drops of Neem mixed with  carrier oils  as a base on my scalp to prevent dry scalp.

Because Neem is a natural anti-inflammatory it works similarly to many prescription drugs, however, it is very moisturizing.

My Process¬†I create a combination of either olive oil, castor oil, or any carrier oil mixed with a few drops of Neem. I own the Neem oil like in the photo above. I purchased it from Whole Foods Market but will likely repurchase from becasue it is less expensive and I can stock up on some other goodies. I mix my oils in a small bottle¬†with a¬†medicine dropper. I think take the dropper and spread the oil on my scalp and massage it in. I then put on a plastic shower cap and let it sit for at least an hour. After,¬†an hour I wash my hair and scalp with Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo (this stuff is inexpensive and AMAZING!!!) I then deep condition with a deep condish of my choice then let my hair air dry.

Keshia’s Dry¬†Scalp/Dry Skin Mix 70% Olive oil, 25%¬†Mixture of other carrier¬†oils, 8 to¬†10 drops of 100%

Big Girls Don’t Cry

¬†I am shocked with the overwhelming response to the post about limerance. The comments were amazing and I wanted to respect those who asked that I not publicly post their comments. Dealing with heartache is not easy, especially when you hear that the person you have been aching for has moved on and gotten married, engaged, or in one case “came out”. I am not a doctor or therapist by any means but before you think it is never going to end or are still in denial with that little voice in back of your head telling you, he still likes you or that this is just the set up and it is going to turn into one of those romance movies from Nora Ephron–I suggest you evaluate yourself or pay a professional to do it for you. Most times when it’s over…it really is over.¬† Take it as a life lesson and grow from it. Use the opportunity to better yourself. Re-direct your energy into something positive like picking new hobby. I don’t suggest however transferring the feelings onto someone else that in itself is just a bad idea all around. But again, I stress I am not a doctor and this is solely my opinion.

I do hope that everyone finds the help they need and are not afraid to ask for it. Please feel free to keep sending the comments I am happy to respond and listen most of all. Also, don’t be afraid as the article suggested to consider anti-anxiety medication or anti-depressant if your doctor believes that is a viable option. Trust me Zoloft is the new black. Just kidding. Seriously, the best way to move on is to in the words of Nike, Just do it. I know it is a lot easier said than done but after years of wanting something you are never going to get anyway; what do you have to lose?

So in the words of the AMAZING Fergie…I got some straightening out to do. I’m going to miss you like a child misses their blanket but I’ve got to get a ¬†move on with my life…Big Girls Don’t Cry.

One of my favorite quotes from President Obama is¬† “Our future is not written for us but by us” I share this with you because I want you to see that there is so much more and if you want it–do what it takes to get it because in the instance of another AWESOME song to which I love!!!! Your future is Unwritten ūüôā

Shoe Search 2012…Search for the Right Running Shoe

I finally made time to go look for running shoes. I knew I had weird feet and if I was going to take this running thing seriously then I needed the right shoes. So I made a trip to my local running store Fleet Feet Shoes for gait testing. In true Keshia fashion my 20 minute-max trip to get shoes turned into an over an hours and half. During this process I had to come to terms with a few unsettling facts like my feet are incredibly long and to top it off very narrow. I have been wearing the wrong size shoes and going bigger made me cringe and the complex about my feet even larger.

Over an hour and half later after trying on more than 10 pairs of shoes including several pairs of Saucony, Asics, Brooks, Adidas, Mizuno,¬†New Balance, and Nike. Like Goldilocks I ran into the problem of shoes being too wide, too hard, too spacious in the heel, not enough support, and not enough stability. And not to mention some were just too small and other that made me feel like Crusty the Clown and I was tripping over the toes…so sad for me.

So in the end we think we may have found the most appropriate shoes for my feet. The are the Nike Zoom Structure. They were great for structure and for the newbie runner I am the offer cushion and amazing support for my archless feet.

My hopefully future running shoes

Mizuno Women's Wave Rider 15 Limited Edition

Both shoes are affordable and are in the price range I am willing to pay. Hopefully this is the start of my new journey and I will keep this up past the accessories phase–which is generally my favorite part ūüôā

Considering a 2012 Challenge.

I have become addicted to BossyGirl1980’s blog. I have been considering of getting involved in a couple of challenges for a while but me I forget to track my progress on the blog or I forget all togerther about the challenge. However, she has set up a program I think I can follow and um, remember. I have not consistently worked out since 2005-2006 and I was oh—40 pounds lighter (insert cringe here). Without further ado here is the challenge if you would like to join in! I plan on buying running shoes this weeknd or next week for real this time.

New Year Resolutions…Weight Loss Challenge 101

With the New Year comes a lot of promises if eating right, exercising and trying to become a better person. For a while people stick to all of their goals but then something happens (miss a workout, scale says you gained weight, you get frustrated, etc) and you stop with all of your plans. Before you know it it’s December and you have lost ZERO pounds. Nada.Nothing. Before you spend 2012 like you did 2011, I have something for you. Before I go into what  this challenge is going to be like like me show you a picture. Here goes…
From November 2010 to December 2011

So if you look at my montage of photos, you notice that on the first slide I weighed a massive 225 pounds. Yep, my arms were jiggly, my stomach looked like I was still pregnant and my self esteem was in the pits. Ever since having my two toddlers I had let myself go..

But in November 2010 I decided a needed a change.

I began to workout.

I decided to give a damn about what I put in my mouth and my head.

I began to hold myself accountable.

I decided to change me.

Now on December 29, 2011 I am 32 pounds smaller; however that is not enough.

I weigh 196 pounds ( I apparently gained 6 pounds over Christmas Break but I’ll weigh myself in the morning to be sure) and for someone  of my frame I need to be at most 150 pounds.

Hence here comes the FIRST challenge for 2012. (Yes there will be more)

A challenge that is not interested in counting points or scolding you for not eating rabbit food  all day but one that will encourage and hold you accountable every step of the way.

Challenge : Pick a weight loss goal for yourself for the next 90 days (every 90 days you will change your goals).  For me, I want to lose 25-30 pounds. Now  for me that is reasonable because it calculates to 2 pounds per week but pick a goal that is reasonable to you. Remember that you have the whole year to lose  so don’t get all crazy this first time!

Now that’s the easy part..right..picking a goal. However, how will you reach it? Simple by using S.M.A.R.T. management of goals.

This is how the challenge will work:

1. Every week participants will weigh in on Sunday morning. Take a picture of your weight and/or measurements and post them on the weekly weigh in chart (coming this Sunday) on this blog.

2. Participants will commit to exercising (what ever form suits you) for 4 days a week for 45 minutes each session.

3. Through Skype (User Name: BossyGirl) or Twitter (@bossygirl1980) we will have a weekly chat about our successes, failures and hang ups for the week under the hashtag #fitbossychicks on Monday night at 9pm EST.

4. Employ some type of online weight loss tool such as : Lose It, Spark People, etc to track your weight loss and fitness. These tools will tell you how many calories  you need a day and has the calculate the meal plans, etc right for you.

On April 1st, 2012 we will videotape our final weigh in and the winner will receive fabulous natural hair prizes courtesy of BossyGirl (me)!!!

So what do you have to do to enter? Get your doctor’s permission. Then, leave a comment and on January 1st we start!!!

Remember the saying, ‚Äúsummer bodies are made in the winter!‚ÄĚ

So are¬† you down? Don‚Äôt be scared of the ‚Äúnew you‚ÄĚ!!!
